Grammar notes

ไป /pay/ and มา /maa/used to indicate direction of motion

The verbs ไป /pay/ and มา /maa/ occur as postpositions with other verbs to indicate direction of motion; ไป /pay/ 'motion away from the speaker' and มา /maa/ 'motion toward the speaker'. Observe the following examples:

เข้ามา khâw maa	enter (towards the speaker)
เข้าไป khâw pay	enter (away from the speaker)
ออกมา ɔ̀ɔk maa	exit (towards the speakers)
ออกไป ɔ̀ɔk pay	exit (away from the speaker)
โทรไป (โทรศัพท์ไป) thoo pay (thoorasàp pay)	telephone (away from the speaker)
โทรมา (โทรศัพท์มา) thoo maa (thoorasàp maa)	telephone (towards the speaker)
เดินมา dəən maa	walk (towards the speaker)

The meaning of เข้าไป /khâw pay/ , เข้ามา /khâw maa/ , ออกมา /ɔ̀ɔk maa/ , and ออกไป /ɔ̀ɔk pay / is illustrated in the chart in the proceeding lesson (lesson 16).

Prepositions in compounds

Prepositions such as ใน /nay/ 'in', นอก /nɔ̂ɔk/ 'outside of', etc., may occur with nouns like ข้าง /khâaŋ/ 'side' and ทาง /thaaŋ/ 'way, path' to form derivatives with the meaning 'space relationship'*.

The following are examples:

ข้างใน /khâaŋnay / 'inside',

ข้างนอก /khâaŋnɔ̂ɔk/ 'outside',

ข้างหน้า /khâaŋnâa/ 'in front of',

ข้างบน /khâaŋbon/ 'up above',

Exercises

Use the maps at the end of this lesson with the first exercise.

• One student asks another if he knows where various buildings are. A second student gives the location either in terms of another building (directly opposite the Erawan Hotel, etc.) or gives directions as to how to get there (cross the street, go to the corner, etc.) Use the points marked A, B, C, D, and E as starting points for directions.
• One student reports to another that someone has telephoned him. There follows an exchange concerning (l) the person that called, (2) time of the call, and (3) the contents of the message.
• One student tells another one that he called him up last night (or yesterday, etc.). They discuss the time of the call and the message.
• Each student describes a 'trip' he has made recently in terms of places visited and times of visits. Another student asks questions about the trip (the location of places visited, the time he left home, the time he returned home, etc.).
