Grammar notes

Use of ก็ได้

When ก็ได้ /kɔ̂ɔdâay/ follows Noun+ไหน /nǎy/ , it indicates that either of two or more of the options is acceptable.

A:	ผมควรจะไปบ้านคุณเวลาไหน phǒm khuancà pay bâan khun weelaa nǎy	What time of day should I go to your house?

		เวลาเช้าได้ weelaa cháaw dâay	Morning is O.K.
		เวลาเที่ยงได้ weelaa thîaŋ dâay	Noon is O.K.
B:	เวลาไหนก็ได้ = weelaa nǎy kɔ̂ɔdâay=		Any time is all right
		เวลากลางคืนได้ weelaa klaaŋkhʉʉn dâay	Nighttime is O.K.
		เวลา...ได้ weelaa... dâay	...

A:	เราจะกินข้าวที่ร้านไหนกัน raw cà kinkhâaw thîi ráan nǎy kan	Which restaurant shall we eat at?

		ร้านนี้ได้ ráan níi dâay	This restaurant is O.K.
		ร้านนั้นได้ ráan nán dâay	That restaurant is O.K.
B:	ร้านไหนก็ได้ ráan nǎy kɔ̂ɔdâay		Any one is all right
		ร้านโน้นได้ ráan nóon dâay	The restaurant over there is O.K.

อยาก versus อยากได้

อยาก /yàak/ and อยากได้ /yàakdâay/ both mean 'want' or 'would like', but they are used differently. อยาก /yàak/ is usually followed by a Verb Phrase and only rarely by a Noun Phrase; whereas, อยากได้ /yàakdâay/ is normally followed by a Noun Phrase. Observe the following examples:

	I	want	a house with two bedrooms.

Two types of noun compounds

Following are two of the ways that Noun Compounds may be formed in Thai:

(1)	Noun compound:	Noun + verb phrase

	ห้องรับแขก living room: ห้อง room + รับ receive + แขก guest hɔ̂ŋrápkhɛ̀ɛkliving room:hɔ̂ŋroom +rápreceive +khɛ̀ɛkguest
	ห้องนอน bedroom: ห้อง + นอน sleep hɔ̂ŋnɔɔnbedroom:hɔ̂ŋ+nɔɔnsleep
	ห้องเก็บของ storeroom: ห้อง + เก็บ store + ของ things hɔ̂ŋkèpkhɔ̌ɔŋstoreroom:hɔ̂ŋ+kèpstore +khɔ̌ɔŋthings
	ห้องทานข้าว dining room: ห้อง + ทาน eat + ข้าว rice hɔ̂ŋ thaankhâawdining room:hɔ̂ŋ+thaaneat +khâawrice

(2)	Noun compound:	Noun + noun

	ห้องอาหาร dining room: ห้อง + อาหาร food hɔ̂ŋaahǎandining room:hɔ̂ŋ+aahǎanfood
	(ห้อง) ครัว kitchen: ห้อง + ครัว kitchen (hɔ̂ŋ) khruakitchen:hɔ̂ŋ+khruakitchen
	โรงรถ carport: โรง building + รถ vehicle rooŋrótcarport:rooŋbuilding +rótvehicle
	สวนดอกไม้ flower garden: สวน garden + ดอกไม้ flower sǔandɔ̀ɔkmáyflower garden:sǔangarden +dɔ̀ɔkmáayflower

a)	Find out if someone has a house to rent. He indicates that he has several, and asks you if you want a single story house. You say you want a two story house.
b)	Tell someone that you have a masonry house that is completely screened in. Ask him if he wants to rent it. He says he doesn't.
