Notes on the basic dialog

  • A จังหวัด /caŋwàt/ is an administrative unit in the Thai government. It may be translated 'province'. There are 77 in Thailand.
  • ชาว /chaaw/ means 'resident' or 'native'.
  • Observe the difference in meaning between เก่ง /kèŋ/ 'good' (in the sense of skillful) and ดี /dii/ 'good' (in general).
เขาเป็นคนดี /kháw pen khon dii/ 'He's a good (or nice) person'.
เขาเรียนหนังสือเก่ง /kháw rian naŋsʉ̌ʉ kèŋ/ 'He's a good student (studies well).'
  • ไปไหน /pay nǎy/ is frequently used as a casual greeting.

Grammar notes

เคย /khəəy/ to indicate past experiences

เคย /khəəy/ + Verb Phrase is used to refer to experience in the past.

เขาเคยเป็นครู
kháw khəəy pen khruu
He used to be a teacher.
คุณเคยไปเมืองไทยไหม
khun khəəy pay mʉaŋ thay mǎy
Have you ever been to Thailand?

The affirmative response to เคย /khəəy/ + Verb Phrase + ไหม /mǎy/ questions is เคย /khəəy/ ; the negative response is ไม่เคย /mây khəəy/

ไป /pay/ + place expressions

ไป /pay/ 'to go' and มา /maa/ 'to come' may be followed by place expressions (โรงเรียน /rooŋrian/ , etc.) or by Verb Phrases indicating an activity (ซื้อของ /sʉ́ʉ khɔ̌ɔŋ/ 'buy things', etc.). Either the place expression or Verb Phrase may be replaced by ไหน /nǎy/ in questions, thus:

Q: ไปไหน
pay nǎy
Where are you going?
(or) What are you going (someplace) to do?
A: ไปโรงเรียน
pay rooŋrian
(I'm) going to school.
(or) ไปซื้อของ
pay sʉ́ʉ khɔ̌ɔŋ
(I'm) going shopping.

Lack of verb inflection

Since the verb in Thai does not have changes in form to correlate with changes in time (tense changes), a sentence like ผมไปโรงเรียน /phǒm pay rooŋrian/ might be interpreted as I'm going to school', 'I go to school', or 'I went to school'. This does not usually result in ambiguity, however, since the context the utterance occurs in usually makes it clear which interpretation is intended.

Omission of subject pronoun

The pronoun subject may be omitted anytime its omission does not result in misunderstanding. Observe these examples:

A: ไปไหน
pay nǎy
Where are (you) going?
B: ไปตลาดครับ
pay talàat khráp
(I'm) going to the market.

The pronoun is sometimes omitted in statements; it is frequently omitted in questions, and is almost always omitted in responses to questions.

Sentence + ได้ /dâay/ to indicate ‘possibility’ or ‘suitability’

The sentence + ได้ /dâay/ construction is used to indicate that something is 'possible, suitable, all right', thus

ผมพูดภาษาไทยได้
phǒm phûut phaasǎa thay dâay
I can speak Thai.
คุณพูดภาษาไทยได้ไหม
khun phûut phaasǎa thay dây mǎy
Can you speak Thai?
Affirmative response: ได้ครับ
dâay khráp
Yes, I can.
Negative response: ไม่ได้ครับ
mây dây khráp
No, I can't.

Since ได้ /dâay/ is considered to be the main verb in constructions of this type, the negative ไม่ /mây/ is placed just before it in negative statements, thus:

เขาไปตลาดไม่ได้
kháw pay talàat mây dây
She is unable to go to the market.

The subject of the sentence is the sentence เขาไปตลาด /kháw pay talàat/

Sentence + เป็น /pen/ to indicate ‘ability to perform some activity’

The Sentence + เป็น /pen/ construction is used to indicate that 'someone knows how to perform some activity', thus:

Statement: ผมขับรถเป็น
phǒm khàp rót pen
I know how to drive a car.
Negative statement: เขาเล่นดนตรีไม่เป็น
kháw lên dontrii mây pen
He doesn't know how to play a musical instrument.
Question: คุณเล่นดนตรีไทยเป็นไหม
khun lên dontrii thay pen mǎy
Can you play a Thai music?
Affirmative response: เป็นครับ
pen khráp
Yes, I can.
Negative response: ไม่เป็นครับ
mây pen khráp
No, I can't.

เป็น /pen/ is considered the main verb in constructions of this type, consequently, the negative ไม่ /mây/ is placed just in front of it, and it is the normal response to questions. The sentence คุณเล่นดนตรีไทย /khun lên dontrii thay/ is the subject of the combined sentence.

Use of เป็น /pen/ or ได้ /dâay/ when skill is involved

In situations where ability to do something is a matter of having learned the technique of doing it, either เป็น /pen/ or ได้ /dâay/ may be used interchangeably, thus:

ผมพูดภาษาไทยได้
phǒm phûut phaasǎa thay dâay
I can speak Thai.
ผมพูดภาษาไทยเป็น
phǒm phûut phaasǎa thay pen
I can speak Thai.

In situations in which inability to do something results not from a lack of technique or skill but for other reasons, only ได้ /dâay/ and not เป็น /pen/ can be used.

ผมขับรถเป็น แต่วันนี้ขับไม่ได้ ผมไม่สบาย
phǒm khàprót pen tɛ̀ɛ wanníi khàp mây dây phǒm mây sabaay
I know how to drive a car, but I can't drive today. I don’t feel well.

Use of เคย /khəəy/ + ได้ /dâay/ or เป็น /pen/

Both เคย /khəəy/ 'used to' and ได้ /dâay/ or เป็น /pen/ can occur in the same sentence, thus:

เขาเคยเล่นดนตรีเป็น
kháw khəəy lên dontrii pen
He used to be able to play music.
คุณเคยพูดภาษาจีนเป็นไหม
khun khəəy phûut phaasǎa ciin pen mǎy
Were you formerly able to speak Chinese?

The affirmative response to this question is เคย /khəəy/ 'Yes, I was.' The negative response is ไม่เคย /mây khəəy/ 'No, I wasn't.'
