Completive verbs* in Thai are somewhat similar to certain types of adverbs in English that occur with verbs and form constructions having a completely different meaning, such as figure out, bring up, etc., except that in Thai the completive verb usually indicates that the action referred to in the main verb was brought to conclusion, thus คิด /khít/ 'to think' and คิดออก /khítɔ̀ɔk/ 'to figure out'. If the result of the action is unsuccessful, the negative is placed before the completive, not the main verb:
คิดไม่ออก khítmâyɔ̀ɔk |
'I did not succeed in figuring it out* |
ยากมากผมคิดไม่ออก yâak mâak phǒm khítmâyɔ̀ɔk |
'It is very difficult. I can't figure it out* |
ผมนึกไม่ออกว่าเขาอยู่ที่ไหน phǒm nʉ́kmâyɔ̀ɔk wâa khǎw yùu thîinǎy |
'I can't recall where he lives.' |

In English use of the personal pronoun immediately after its noun antecedent, such as Mary she, or my friend he, etc. is considered substandard English. This is not the case in Thai. Examples of this type (in the third person) are very common. The choice of pronoun is dependent on the degree of intimacy and the relative status levels of the speaker and the person referred to.
A. | เพื่อนเขา phʉ̂an khǎw |
'(my) friend he’ ' (my) friend he’ |
Not intimate, about equal status. |
B. | ลูกผมแก lûuk phǒm kɛɛ |
'my children they' | Intimate, equal status. |
C. | คุณพระบาทท่าน khun phrá bàat thân |
'Mr. Prapas he' | Least intimate, superior status (rank or age) to speaker. |
Borrow and lend are related in Thai in much the same way as in English. Observe the examples below:
Subject | ขอ khɔ̌ɔ |
ยืม yʉʉm |
Object | Lender | (Amount) |
khun A | ขอ khɔ̌ɔ |
ยืม yʉʉm |
เงิน ŋən |
khun B | 10 baht |
Mr. A | asks to | borrow | money | from Mr. B | 10 baht |
'Mr. A asks Mr. B for the loan of 10 baht.' |
Compare the above with this:
Subject | ให้ hây |
Object | Recipient | ยืม yʉʉm |
(Amount) |
khun A | ให้ hây |
เงิน ŋən |
khun B | ยืม yʉʉm |
5 baht |
Mr. A | gave | money | (to) Mr. B | to borrow | 5 baht |
'Mr. A lent Mr. B five baht.' |
ฝาก /fàak/ is used to indicate that you are entrusting some task to another person or something to an institution.
(NP) | ฝาก fàak |
(NP) | Verb Phrase |

(คุณ) (khun) |
ซื้อยาด้วย sʉ́ʉ yaa dûay |
(I) | intrust | (you) | to buy medicine (for me) too. |

In sentences like the following:
The following construction is used to indicate what material an object is made of.
NP | ทำ tham |
ด้วย dûay |
Material |
โต๊ะตัวนี้ tó tua níi |
ทำ tham |
ด้วย dûay |
ไม้ máy |
'This table is made of wood.' |
Other material such as เงิน /ŋən/ 'silver', ไม้สัก /máy sàk/ 'teak', เหล็ก /lèk/ 'iron', กระดาษ /kràdàat/ 'paper', or กระจก /kràcòk/ 'glass'. The construction above is also used in a limited number of cases to indicate the instrument that was used in making something, as in this example:
กระเป๋าใบนั้นทำด้วยมือ kràpǎw bay nán tham dûaymʉʉ |
'That bag is handmade' |
In place of มือ /mʉʉ/ , เครื่อง /khrʉ̂aŋ/ (จักร /càk/) 'machine' could be used.
