About
The Reading Assistant takes Thai text and splits it into words. Hovering over a word (desktop only), or clicking on a word, provides an English definition of that word (where available).
How to Use
Paste the text you would like to be analysed into the text box. If you're not automatically taken to the results page, click on the "Lookup" button.
To clear the results and return to the input page, click on the "Reset" button.
Options
- Circle words
- Select this option to put a circle around known words.
- Separate words
- Select this option to add a space after each word.
- Colour words
- Select this option to colour code the different classes of words (see below).
- Show popup (desktop only)
- Select this option to display a popup with English definition(s) of known words when the mouse cursor is over a word.
How it Works
The Assistant sends your text to the webserver where it's split into words using a combination of Artificial Intelligence and a list of Thai words. The results are then returned to your browser for display.
Notes
- With the "circle words" option, known words with an English definition are circled in darkblue ; known words which do not have an English definition are circled in black. (Unrecognised fragments of text are not circled.)
- With the "colour words" option, known words with an English definition are shown in dark blue; known words which do not have an English definition are shown in black; and unrecognised fragments of text are shown in grey.
- Even with the "colour words" option deselected the last clicked on word will sill be highlighted in purple.
- The parsing of proper nouns (e.g. people's names, company names, many loanwords from English) is not great. Unfortunately, there's a tradeoff between the size of the wordlist and the time taken to analyse text, so the wordlist is of limited size.
